Oh, the Cotswolds, that Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the honey-coloured sandstone houses line quaint village streets that could (and probably will) stand in for the next big BBC period drama whilst gentle wooded valleys (combes) and hills rise photogenically above… last autumn I was sent by Which? into the heart of this lovely region, the famous village of Castle Combe, to scout out the very best of what the area had on offer. It was a difficult period of my life – what with drinking in all those idyllic rural pubs and spending the nights in country mansions embosomed by beautiful woodlands – but I got through it.
