Rum’s Dazzling Dark Skies: Film Collaboration Between Me, Fly Films UK and Isle of Rum Community Out Now!

During 2024 the Isle of Rum, off the coast of Scotland, achieved something quite remarkable: it became just the second place in the UK, and one of only a handful in the world, to achieve International Dark Sky Status – the highest designation of Dark Sky status, reserved for places that have truly inky skies and have made efforts to particularly protect their nature. This achievement was made all the more remarkable because the total population of the community that achieved something virtually unprecedented in the UK was just 40! Film-maker Davey Poremba of Fly Films UK and myself captured the incredible journey the island made to achieve this… and this is the result!

Filmed on location on the island, this is a film of stunning nature, of beautiful insights into the island’s nature, its sustainable travel possibilities, its character and its characters(!) and perhaps above all Rum’s never-say-die spirit. It is a truly beautiful film – presented and scripted by me and masterfully filmed by Davey – and we are both immensely grateful to the Royal Astronomical Society for giving us the funding to be able to achieve this.

Please have a look at the film and pass the word on! Here’s the link to the film on the RAS website:
