I have waxed lyrical about the sheer quantity and quality of castles in Slovakia and the Czech Republic for years – particularly on the Slovak travel and culture website I run, EnglishmaninSlovakia. In Slovakia especially, they seemingly crest every hilltop and – for the most part – remain enigmatic and un-touristy. Even with some of the most renowned fortresses, in this most densely castellated part of the world you can often have the most poignant ruins to yourself.
