It will not surprise anyone who knows me even a little that two of my favourite things are coffee and history. Mix them together and, sure enough, the end product – what some might term my dream environment – is a Viennese coffeehouse. Vienna’s coffeehouses are some of the planet’s most traditional eateries – they’re even Unesco-listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage – but after their turn-of-the-20th-century heyday, they fell on tough times.
