It’s always amazing to get to speak to the CSMA – truly one of my all-time favourite audiences to speak to – and this talk on how to experience the UK outdoors through its abandoned communities was so enjoyable to research. Being someone who isn’t satisfied if they don’t go the extra mile, research for this took me to the Isle of Skye’s remote forests, less-visited parts of the Valleys and Exmoor National Park’s beautiful woodlands. What is so harrowing about abandoned settlements is the variety of reasons they were abandoned – everything from famine to landslips – and these reasons also make you think about what places we know and love today may become the abandoned communities of the future.
