On Travel, Fatherhood and Trading the Amazon Basin for Backcountry Britain – Interview for Intrepid Times

Sometimes, you know, as travel writers we airbrush a lot of things. We pretend our job is the dream when that is only partially true. We make out our adventures are of the ‘boldly going where few have gone before’ sort; and with our words we craft our travel stories into polished pieces of writing with narrative arcs when of course the trip we’re basing this on was not like that – at least, there might have been moments like that but there were probably just as many or more when we were in a supermarket, in a queue, waiting at an airport or bus station alone.

What I love about this interview for Intrepid Times is that is gets way beyond the airbrushed bullshit. This gets real. Yes, the Amazon Basin in which I specialise and yes, the UK outdoors in which I specialise even more. But also other stuff. Everyday stuff. The stuff that freelancers sometimes have to go through and the stuff that life sometimes throws at us; the journeys that might not be quite so glam but which are really of far greater importance. And what Intrepid Times specialise in asking the questions that probe for deeper more meaningful insights and so that’s what happens here: pretty much the story of my last 20 years, laid bare! So I hope there are some interesting take-aways for a lot of you here…
